Legislation to Circumvent Local Government on Zoning Decisions

On Tuesday, February 24, over 100 local officials stood together in Downtown Detroit to defend something fundamental: our community’s right to make our own decisions.

In just 48 hours, 1,300 local officials representing 6.2 million Michigan residents signed on in opposition to one-size-fits-all zoning legislation introduced in Lansing.

This isn’t about politics — it’s about people.

Our communities are not identical. Michigan is urban and rural. Growing in some places, stabilizing in others. Local leaders work every day to balance housing needs, infrastructure capacity, environmental protection, public safety, and neighborhood character — all with direct input from residents who show up, speak up, and vote.

Statewide zoning preemption would sever that connection. It shifts decisions away from the people who live here and into a top-down mandate that ignores local context and infrastructure realities.

Housing solutions must be collaborative, community-led, and properly funded — not forced.

A strong Michigan depends on strong local governments. And strong local governments depend on local voices being heard.

Our community deserves better.
