About Natural Areas Stewardship

Our park system includes over 1,500 acres across 16 parks, several greenspaces, and the Paint Creek Trail within Oakland Township. These beautiful areas protect unique natural features, native plants, and wildlife habitat. Whether you enjoy walking in the parks, observing the wildlife, or just watching the colors change from season to season, these natural areas are a quiet refuge.

The stewardship staff restores native plant communities, removes invasive plant species, and keeps track of what’s going on in the natural areas. We couldn’t do this without your help! If you like to get involved, check out our volunteer opportunities, participate in a workday, or stop by the Parks and Recreation Office on the second floor of the Paint Creek Cider Mill at 4480 Orion Rd, Rochester, MI 48306.

RSVP for stewardship events by contacting Ben VanderWeide at bvanderweide@oaklandtownship.org or 248-651-7810, ext 401.

For workdays, remember to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain. We provide tools, light snacks, water, and training. All minors must have a waiver signed by a guardian, and minors under 14 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Check our natural areas stewardship website for updated information on these events.
