1150 Silverbell Road
Rochester, MI 48306
This 0.5 acre open space conservation area was acquired to preserve the parcel’s unique prairie fen wetland community and scenic viewshed along the Paint Creek Trail. Hike north from Gunn Road or south from Adams Road along the Paint Creek Trail. Stay on the path to protect the special natural areas along the trail.
Acquired using Land Preservation Millage funds in 2003, this 10-acre natural area lies on the west side of the Paint Creek Trail, just north of Silver Bell Rd. The natural area protects a globally rare wet-mesic prairie remnant, southern wet meadow, mesic oak savanna, and the original bed of Paint Creek and its floodplain. Check back often in spring, summer, and fall to enjoy the changing tapestry of beautiful wildflowers!
Most of Oakland Township used to be prairie or oak savanna, but nearly all of it is gone. Ongoing stewardship at the site seeks to protect our natural heritage by providing refuge for sun-loving plant, insect, and wildlife species that rely on open prairie and savanna landscapes. We restore the high-quality natural communities using prescribed fire, invasive shrub control, native seed collecting, and canopy thinning. Contact our Natural Areas Stewardship team if you’d like to get involved with the habitat restoration work at this site!
For protection of the site’s natural features please view from the trail only. Parking is available at the junction of Silver Bell Road and the Paint Creek Trail or at the Paint Creek Cider Mill.
